Getting Started

Q: I logged on, now what?
A: If this is your first time on Northern Crossroads, even if you've played on other muds before, go through the mud school. The first time you log on, you'll start there, so go through it. If you logged on before and now can't find the mud school, it's up from the room where you log in, the Golden Temple.

Q: How do I go up in level?
A: Go to Bozo's Training Room (up from Market Square, 2s,u from the Golden Temple, or the room that Dax will summon you to). Now type "train level X" where X is the letter corresponding to the class you want to train (W for Warrior, T for Thief, M for Mage, or C for Cleric).

Q: Who is this Dax person anyway?
A: Dax was a player on NC mud, who decided to set up his character Dax (who is female) as a "bot". Short for "robot", Dax will cast spells on you. Just say "dax spells" for a list of spells that Dax will cast, and "dax " to receive the spell (ie: "dax armor"). Saying "dax mana" will have Dax say her remaining mana, "dax identify" will have Dax cast improved identify on you and tell you the results, etc. Give Dax a hug while you're there!

Q: How do I make my stats better?
A: In Bozo's Training Room, type "train ", ie: "train dex". It costs a certain number of practice sessions to advance a stat, based upon your class. For example, it takes less practice sessions for a warrior to advance strength than it does a mage, and the opposite is true for intelligence.

Q: Why can't I get all my stats up to 18?
A: Each race is different, and all have different maximums for stats. Check out the "race" command for help on your specific race, or look L here.

Q: What are practice sessions, and how do I get them?
A: You receive them automatically as you advance in level, the number being based upon your wisdom at the time you train. They are used to train your stats, spells, and skills. If you run out, just advance in level and you'll get more! If your level is maxxed out, you can buy more at a Practomat, one being located in each clubhouse.

Q: What is levelling equipment?
A: Equipment that modifies your stats so that they are higher than your innate statistics, so that when you go up in level you have a better chance of getting more practice sessions, hitpoints, mana, movement, etc. Intelligence also helps you to train spells and skills using less practice sessions. If you don't have any, ask on gossip; some are easy to get and some higher level players might be willing to give or loan you some.

Q: How do I get my second class?
A: You have to find the shrine in the Paladine's Temple zone. If you're not a warrior, you're definitely going to need help... politely ask on gossip for someone to help you. If you are a Warrior and want to try it yourself, from Market Square, go 10e,n and "hunt shrine". There shouldn't be anything in there that will attack you.

Q: How do I get rid of this piece of equipment that is cursed?
A: If you're a cleric, try casting remove curse on the offending piece of equipment. Anyone can go to the Temple Altar and type "pray". The cursed equipment should have the curse removed and fall to the ground.

Q: What does it mean when I get zapped by a piece of equipment?
A: It means that you are probably the wrong alignment (good, evil, neutral, etc). Also, some equipment is PK-Only, that will zap you also. Try identifying the item. If alignment is the problem, get help from Dax.

Q: I just walked into a room and I'm dead, and my equipment is gone?!
A: You just hit a Death Trap. These are nastly... You don't lose hps, constitution, or gold, but you lose your equipment. There is a good chance that some of it ended up in the "Timequest". Quickly ask on gossip for someone to do it and get your stuff back.

Terminology

Q: Golden Temple?
A: The standard starting room, if you're not a member of a club. This room is 2n of the Market Square. The very first time a new character logs on, they appear in the Mud School. After that, they appear in the Golden Temple. If you've joined a club, you will appear inside the starting room for your club. How to get to M[] from there varies with the club.

Q: DT?
A: Death Trap. See the explanation of that above, in the "Getting Started" section.

Q: M[], m[], msq, etc?
A: Market Square. The standard meeting place of the mud, just below Bozo (and Dax). This is where all zone directions start.

Q: REF?
A: Random Eyeball Festival! Perhaps the oldest regular quest event on Northern Crossroads, it is a quest to find all copies of a particular item that an immortal has hidden all over the mud. Originally it was always eyeballs, but as people learned that, it was changed to a different item each time so that people don't start early, while the immortal is hiding the items! How do you play? Ask to join on gossip and you'll be transferred to the starting room, where an immortal will pick team captains, who will then take turns picking players for their respective teams. Once it starts, use the "locate item" spell to find the room name where the item is hidden, then run and get it, killing any mobs along the way! This quest truly tests your knowledge of the mud!

Q: MK?
A: Mortal Kombat mode! All players who choose to join are thrown into the MK arena (a close copy of Midgaard, with some diferences) and must fight until only one survives. Type "kombat" to join.

Q: CTF?
A: Capture the Flag. A mode where players compete to capture the flag of the opposing team, kill each other, guards, etc. When this mode is on, type "capture" for more info.

Q: Mallins?
A: Mallin's Chamber of Fame. Below Market Square, this room has faster regen rate.

Q: Temple Altar?
A: Same room that holds the Temple Board, 3n of M[]. This is the main bulletin board for announcements, and the room where you can type "pray" to have cursed equipment removed.

Equipment

Q: Where do I get better equipment?
A: From doing zones. When you're very low in level, there's not much good equipment that you're capable of getting, but that will increase with time and your level. For help getting started on some better equipment, ask on gossip, advice, or your club channel (if you're a member of one). The best advice I can give is to ask once, maybe twice, do it politely, and then hope for the best. Someone that does that is more likely to get donations than someone who begs constantly.

Q: What are all these things at the bottom of my affects page?
A: Those are your "bits", and some of them are very useful. Each one gives you a specific attribute, and they're listed below.

Q: Detect Invisible?
A: Very important -- lets you see invisible people. Will cut down on the number of "Someone"s that you see talking on the gossip channel! You can't send tells or give items to someone that you cannot see, and you can't attack a monster if you can't see them. This bit is most commonly found on lights.

Q: Sense Life?
A: Very important -- it lets you tell where hidden people are. While they're hidden, you can't interact with them in the current room, such as giving items, looking at, or attacking. This applis to monsters that hide as well. Most commonly found on lights.

Q: Rune Protection?
A: Very important -- prevents some aggressive monsters from attacking you. This can keep you alive, especially while doing higher level zones. The people you zone with will want you to have this.

Q: Haste?
A: Very important -- gives you an extra attack every round!

Q: Sanctuary?
A: Very important --- you take half damage!

Q: Immune Silence?
A: Very important -- prevents monsters from casting silence spells on you. Unlike players, monsters can do this during combat, and if you're a spellcaster, being silenced can be very bad!

Q: Parry?
A: Fairly important -- you will automatically attempt to parry attacks. This is most important if you do not have the skill, which comes from the warrior class.

Q: Immune Summon?
A: This shouldn't be important, but it can be, especially if you're fighting other characters in PK, Chaos, etc. Prevents people from summoning you to them, visiting you, opening up a portal to you, etc. If you're very low level, it's better not to have this, because then someone can summon you if you get into trouble.

Q: Fly?
A: Fairly important -- you can fly in the air, which means that you can go over water, rooms that require flight, and a "flying DT" room will not affect you.

Q: Infravision?
A: Fairly important -- You see better in dark areas. If you have a good light, this isn't as important as if you're naked, but it also helps for peeking into adjacent rooms (since they're probably no one in there with a light).

Q: Holy?
A: Fairly important -- sometimes when you cast sells, they use half as much mana as usual. This becomes more important when you're very high level, and doing zones that have anti-magic rooms, and you happen to be a Druid or Archmage.

Q: Sponge?
A: Somewhat important -- when you kill a monster and you're not grouped, you gain mana as they die, up to a max of 50. This can be useful if you're fighting solo and using spells to kill monsters while you fight.

Q: Sneak, Hide?
A: Neither of these is that important unless you're fighting other players in PK fights, chaos, challenges, MK, CTF, etc. Sneak means that no one gets a message when you arrive in or leave from a room, and hide tries to conceal your identity inside a room.

Q: Invisible?
A: Not important -- most everyone has detect invisible anyway. Very few aggressive monsters will be fooled by your invisibility either.

Q: Detect Evil?
A: Not important -- when you see a monster in a room, if it has "red aura" in its quick description, it's evil.

Q: Detect Magic?
A: Not important -- when you see an item, if its short desciption says "it glows blue" then it's magical.

Q: Protection From Evil?
A: Not important -- get Rune of Protection instead.

Q: Immune Charm?
A: Not important -- I don't even know if you can charm other players anymore at all, even in Chaos, etc.

Spells

Q: How do I learn new spells?
A: Go to the guild trainer for your guild, and type "train". You will be given a list of the spells available at your level, and what your current skill level is for each one, ranging from "not learned" to "Superb". To learn a new spell, type "train ", ie: "train armor". Your intelligence affects how easily you learn spells. Translation: each time you type "train " it costs you one practice session, and the higher your intelligence, the less times it will take until you are superb. The least that it will cost is two.

Q: How do I find my guild trainer?
A: Type "dir" for the directions page; the guilds are listed at the top.

Q: How do I know when a spell has run out?
A: You get a different message for each spell. Some are very self- explanatory, such as "You feel less protected as the magical vestment vanishes." Others are a little harder to know exactly which spell has run off, such as when you see "You feel less protected" (this one is armor, btw). The best thing to do is check your "affect" page periodically to see what spells are affecting you, how long they have remaining, and get a feel for when each of them wears off.

Skills

Q: How do I learn new skills?
A: See "How do I learn new spells?" above, the procedure is the same.
